31.05.10

mid-day swim:
Greta
Zasu
Tito
(3)

Once again the three fatties gave us both trouble, but were forced to swim nonetheless. Greta did 7 laps in light-to-moderate seas, Zasu did 5 in moderate seas (got progressively choppier), and Tito did his impersonation of a Navy Seal slipping silently onto land for a mission of murder. A bug-eyed, tiny Seal.

mid-day swim:

They all gave us a fight. Greta did 7 laps, Zasu did 5. Tito did more stationary swimming with Roni in the shallows than laps (he is ADORABLE in the water).

A shorty, straight up the beach to the palm tree and home again; that way nobody gets too tired and everyone has a good time. Perfect group for it.

mid-day swim:
Greta
Lucy
Zasu
Tito
Henry
(5)

Greta did 7 laps in choppy seas. Zasu did 3 (it was too rough for her, but she's a trooper). Tito did about 3 "laps", obviously much smaller ones, and then ran around like a nut on the beach. Lucy sort of bailed on the swimming, but did a little at the end. Henry was just his usual charming self.

Left on the beach, up to Au Soleil Couchant, out to no-man's land, back to the beach at the tortuga sign and home. Tuesday was off the leash for the first part, but she didn't listen very well at the turn into the monte so I put her on until no-man's land, and put her back on near the end of it. She was pretty good for the most part. It was a hard one.

mid-day swimming:
Greta
Zasu
Lucy
Alice
Ginger
Gowron
(6)

Greta did 6 laps in very rough seas. Zasu did maybe a couple, it was too rough for her. Lucy wussed out and didn't swim that much, but she did go in a few times; we let her sisters and Gowron out after The Swimming and ran up the beach a little, and Lucy did that enthusiastically, and she also went in a little then (okay, it was pretty rough). Bosha ran down from Kikis to say hi and pal around a bit. So windy it was painful to the ears, and the water was extremely salty. Everyone was good.

We went fairly long (not short, anyway). Humidity was bad. Everyone behaved themselves and had a good time. Shirley and Ernie had a hard time of it but were fine once we made it to the beach; there were a TON of Pelicans in the water at Au Soleil Couchant, and all the way down to the tortuga sign. Crazy.
GRADE: A

mid-day swims:
Greta
Zasu
Lucy
(3)

Greta did 6 laps. Zasu did 5 laps. Lucy swam with both of them of her own free will, and probably did 10 laps total plus a lot of just plain screwing around and having fun with Mom and Dad in the water. They all really need to do this regularly, so this works out pretty well.

First time after hurting my ankle Tuesday (Ernie pushed past me on the stairs in the rain and I fell). Left late (7.30ish) so we did not go far because George was with us. Excellent group, and with the humidity it was plenty for everyone. Lily swam out to get me at the soldiers' "pier" on the way home.
GRADE: A

afternoon swim:
Greta
Bosha
(2)

Greta did 5 laps in rough seas. Bosha acted like a nut in the sand for a while and then ran down to check out Kikis; she must not be home, because Bosha was back a few minutes later.

evening s/k duty:
Zasu
(1)

Elewah was there with her buds, The Brethren, on the corner where they usually are at the usual time, being goofy. She greeted Zasu joyfully, although her troop was less impressed. Still, it was fine, Zasu and I were walking all around them and they were mostly okay with it. Elewah dined with her crew, as any good leader does, I guess.

Incredibly muggy and uncomfortable, but still a fun walk - Dolores' first. She had a blast. We didn't go too far because it was so unpleasant, but far enough for everyone to stretch their legs and have a good time. Lily and Jack are still a little too much on their own, and like running up to the cows a little too much; they'll get better with time, but they need some work on the leash.

One too many, but Chester really wanted to go and he's always good. This was a long one, the full monty through the monte, down to the beach and home. Tuesday was off the leash or a spell out approaching no-man's land and all the way through it, and then again on the beach; she was good, didn't shy away from me when I wanted to put her back on, and had a good time throughout, on the leash and off. Everyone else was stellar.

Straight up the beach to the palm tree, then back through the monte at the tortuga sign. On the trail home right next to the shrimpery we encountered a parked moto, a shopping bag full of cahuamas and a passed-out drunk lying in the middle of the road. He must've been there all night, which would explain the crazy barking we heard in the monte late in the evening. I managed to rouse him but he was still not capable of speech, and started walking down the road, so I just continued on to get our dogs home, who were all stellar throughout. The things you find in the monte...

Ziggy will just not shut up on the shoreline, but at least he swam out an incredibly far distance to get me (he is not a strong swimmer, so that's at least an "A" for effort). I made Greta do 5 big laps. She is incredibly heavy. I see a nap in my future. Still, she did it valiantly.

THE ROOSTER HAS LANDED. WE CAUGHT THE ROOSTER. SUCCESS. NO MORE ROOSTER MISSIONS. Ahem. Everyone was good and helpful; Elewah even came along, but then ran off to be with her buddies on the way home (quite a little party they throw when they greet her). The rooster is now safe in the styling roost/hutch that Roni built for him and his inevitable, eventual harem.

Osita
(7)

Everyone was good for the most part. We went fairly long and came down to the beach at Au Soleil Couchant, which refreshed everyone. Lucy really wanted to swim home, but we turned back into the monte at the tortuga sign and she started to lag a lot; I'm not sure if it was because she was tired or because she was irritated with me for not staying on the beach. She doesn't seem to have a limp post-run, but she should get glucosamine for a while anyway. Osita was not listening terribly well towards the end, so I put her on the leash for the last run home. George kept up well, but needed a lot of water.

We left reasonably early, and everyone was good. Elewah wanted to stay out afterwards, but she's got a touch of sarna and needs to be treated so she doesn't pass it on to The Brethren, so I had to go round her up. Lily swam on her own a couple of times. Truman barked a little at the N. House people, but I barked a lot more than he did in the end.

Left too late to take Shirley - I should really not do that. After 8am this time of year is too late to take big dogs. We had to cut it short out in the monte because she was obviously going to have trouble going much further; we just headed down to the beach at Au Soleil Couchant instead of going out to no-man's land after we crossed the land bridge out of the shire. Oscar was a little stubborn about keeping up and listening to me on the beach; there seems to be some sort of delicacy piled up at intervals in the sand. I'm guessing it is disgusting. No excuse.

(3)

I had just finished cutting April's hair, and we were both gross as a result, so I thought an insane sprint up the beach past the tortuga sign was just the thing! Well, no, I actually thought that April might behave herself a bit better than that, but apparently she was overcome with emotions best expressed through running her ass off after having had all that hair removed from her. Still, I figured she might do that, and we caught her eventually.

I let Elewah out on her own earlier, but it turns out she was just hanging out in the bushes at the corner, so we sort of swept her up into the run as we flew past. She had a great time, listened well and even tried drinking out of the bottle once like everyone else. Tuesday deserves special mention has having improved her behavior substantially. She, too, had fun, and was good about being on the leash and being let off of it. I let her off about half of the distance, and she was fine about me putting her back on on the beach. She and Elewah played a lot on the way home.

We mainly just screwed around in the shallows.
