29.04.16

morning run:
Eve
Frijolita
Xmul
Lex
Steve
Murci
Cookie
Roxy
Tupo
(9)

Beach run: 8k. We took the blue.bag trail to and from the tortuga sign, with Xmul and Roxy on leashes and Tupo loose. On the beach everyone came off the leash for the most part, as it was deserted; I had them both back on by the time we hit the road into the monte. We ran far to the north on the beach - we could see Playa Maya plainly in the distance. Tupo refuses to get near the water but has a blast on the shore. Everyone ran hard and had a good time.

incoming:
Pearl*
(1)

I'm just catching up on dogonomicon. It's been over a week since the firemen dropped a tiny, fluffy, flea-infested pup on us. Her first bath was a horror-show - Roni intervened manually after the bath and knocked flea corpses off of her for a solid hour. We've taken to calling her "Pearl" because she's white and a little gem. She's extremely independent for being so young and all the big dogs seem to think she's going to be one of them.

24.04.16

morning walk:
Blue
Gowron
Bette
Monkey
Linda
Amber
Zoot
Zoila
Nico
(9)

Roni took this crew for a long, fast walk in the monte to the east. She left with Bette, Amber and Zoila on leashes, which led to some shenanigans with Zoila around the shrimpery, where Zoila took advantage of a dropped leash. She was quickly reigned in and was okay on the leash from there on, with a few outbursts of non-cooperation. Zoila is definitely more stubborn than her sister June but I don't trust June off the leash, either. Still, Murci was that way for a long time at first and hasn't misbehaved in years now... something about those crazy monte dogs. Amber continues to be better, which is really great: she's come home off the leash the last three walks and showed no signs of her "paranoid" attitude. Bette only needs to be restrained for the first few meters and is an angel otherwise; we're more worried about her injuring herself in her initial excitement than anything else. Nico deserves special mention for being a super good girl off the leash on a walk with a lot of dogs. She really loves Roni. It's a joy to see.

midday beach run:
Rufus
Shirley
(2)

Au Soleil Couchant: ~3k. I took these two out on the beach side for a quick run straight north to Au Soleil Couchant and back. They were both great, listened well and had a good time.

afternoon walk:
Alice
Greta
(2)

I took these two out for a slow walk to the shrimpery and back, just to get Greta out on something other than a swim. Roni adjusted the large harness for her and it worked out okay. She got a little tired coming home but it was pretty hot out; we waited in the shade for a couple of minutes and she was fine. Alice screwed around a lot but was a good girl and listened.

morning run:
Truman
Posey
Xmul
Luna
Lex
Murci
Cookie
Junebug
Tupo
(9)

Northern charcos: ~8k. Xmul was off the leash much of the way and was good for most of it; she did bark at someone on a moto as we were passing through the intersection on the way home and I was not happy with her about it. Although she's better than she used to be she's still a little nuts, so I'll have to watch her closely. Other than that there was no misbehavior. I let June off the leash for a couple of long stretches and watched her closely; she gave me no problems getting her back on the leash. She still has problems with people close by and with vehicles but she's getting better. We took our usual northern charcos route and everyone had a great time on a high-paced run.

22.04.16

morning walk:
Bette
Tito
Molly
Linda
Coco
(5)

I took this crew out for a walk in the monte to the east, with Coco on a harness and leash the whole way. Coco was surprisingly up for going with me and was good the whole way on the leash; Roni tied it into a harness configuration and it worked well. She wasn't crazy about the leash at times but we ran some and screwed around a lot and she was better about it coming home. Everyone else was stellar. Tito led from behind the whole way and Bette showed no signs of a limp.

21.04.16

morning walk:
Alice
Ginger
Gracie
George
Chester
Archie
Ernie
Maggie
Ziggy
Stella
(10)

I took this group for a walk in the monte around the tar paper shack to the east and the "terreno federal" road/track. We looped back immediately to the charcos just north of the shack; it's a tiny but farther but it's also shadier on terreno federal and everyone likes a different route once in a while. Stella was good on the leash the whole way. I kept Archie close so he didn't hurt himself but he had to run around a little; I gave him some Leidoff's when we got home, he seems fine. All in all a nice walk with a cute group of older dogs.

morning run:
Blue
Frijolita
Luna
Mega
Steve McQueen
Hazel
Murci
Cookie
Junebug
(9)

Up the beach past Au Soleil Couchant: ~8k. We left with only June on the leash. Murci was so wound up I had to bring us to a halt before we even crossed the road to settle her down a little. If I had thought to bring a second leash she would've been on it but I spaced on this so I just talked her down a bit for the first 250m; she was much better by the shrimpery. We took the blue.bag trail (now sans blue bag) to the beach at the tortuga sign, headed north and went home the way we came. I let June off the leash for the first time in a while on the beach and she was great. I put her back on as we were leaving the beach but maybe next time she'll go a little farther. She did have a bad reaction to a bird trapper we came across just south of the coco trail intersection: I had to pick her up and carry her past him, so she still needs a bit of work and time to be less fearful, but she has improved. Everyone else was exemplary the whole way. We ran north well past A.S.C., to where the beach straightens out south of Playa Maya; other than the bird trapper we saw nobody. June swims like a lunatic and everyone had a blast screwing around with her off the leash. A very high-paced run throughout.

Gowron

Zoot
(7)

Roni took this crew out for a fast walk in the monte on all sides of the land bridge. There were salt workers everywhere and everyone was still great - Amber even came home off the leash, for the second time in a row. Reggie was also off the leash for a lot of it and was a good boy. Everyone had a blast.

Tupo
(9)

Northern charcos: 8k. Good, fast group on Xmul's first run since she got back. Tupo left off the leash and did well. I let Xmul off the leash for an extended period for the first time in a long time and she was very good. I put her back on when she didn't listen to me as quickly as I wanted but she was being good. Everyone was great and had a good time.

mid-day beach dash:
Rufus
Daisy
(2)

Up past the sign and back: ~2k. Just a quick dash to get some energy out. We left and came back via the beach gate and it worked out well. Rufus is much calmer and easier to manage at the gate with fewer other influences and Daisy did not make the situation worse; also, this is really Daisy's jam, she loves to swim and doesn't much like long runs. This was fun for everyone and they were perfect.

vet:
Gracie
Reggie
(2)

Gracie went in to have a tumorous growth cut off and Reggie went in for another ultrasound and to be seen by three different vets (Avalos, Novelo and Sandra). The consensus seems to be that some kind of surgery is warranted, at least to finally determine what the underlying cause of this fatty mass is. Novelo thought it was a hernia. Sandra and Avalos don't agree but they do agree that the only way to figure it out is to go in and look and if there is a hernia then this is also the only path. Both of them were troopers, but Reggie deserves special mention because he hates leaving home and I had to drag him to three different offices. What a sweetie.

morning run:

Chester
Otto
Shirley
Frankie
Twiggy

Roxy
Tupo
(9)

Southern loop: ~6k. Another run through the southern charcos via the middle path instead of the long way, mainly for Shirley's sake. So far runs of this distance haven't led to her having a limp or any other adverse effects, so we'll keep it this far or shorter. Everyone was really good and had a great time. Tupo was off the leash for a major portion of the run and did great. He definitely prefers the monte to the beach.

vet:
Lily
Tupo
(2)

Lily has had blood in her urine and Tupo needed to be neutered. It turns out Lily has a urinary tract infection, not stones as we suspected, so this is actually good news: she's on antibiotics and seems to be less grouchy. We figured we might as well slip Tupo in on this one since he needed to be done and it will be one less to take to the clinic whenever we finally are able to put it on (looking like 8 May now). They both traveled well and did us proud at the vet.

Tupo
(9)

Southern Charcos: 8k. A very high-paced run. Tupo came off the leash as we turned east into the monte from the southern entrance; he was great both on and off the leash, let me get him back on, listened and had a fantastic time. He definitely doesn't like deep water but has no problem running through puddles (although mostly skips around them, kinda cute). June didn't come off the leash but I'm starting to think I can trust her a little and might try it next time. She dosn't freak out completely now when we run into a vehicle or another person. Everyone else was excellent and had a good time.

Archie and I walked slowly up past the HoJo and back. I let him off for a bit and he had fun screwing around but then he wanted to run too much coming home so he went back on the leash. He's such an angel.

afternoon saunter:
Miles
(1)

Miles is our Dawdler in Chief: he can make a walk to the shrimpery and back take damn near an hour. I did the Monte Shuffle, cussing and swatting at bugs as if performing some kind of ritual. I finally lost patience just past the shrimpery intersection and had to pick him up and carry him part of the way home... I think this technically means he won. That's fine. We love him, exasperating as he might be. I'm sure he has his reasons.
