29.07.10

morning run:
Otto
Archie
Chester
Blue
Frijolita
Frankie
Rufus
(7)

Long one, through lots of water and mud: the south way to the road through no-man's land is completely flooded now, it's not possible to come in the back way. The dry bits through no-man's land are only passable on foot now, and the mosquitoes are not to be believed. Seriously: don't listen to them or they'll drive you nuts. There were large numbers of Flamingos in no-man's land and one of the charcos to the northwest, and little crabs everywhere. Went back into the monte at the tortuga sign. Everyone was stellar. We missed Oscar (recovering from surgery).

Good group. Took the medium route, down to the beach and back up into the monte at the tortuga sign. We ran into Weltin's dogs near there, and ours were stellar (hers were not, but no harm done). We also ran into The Brethren near the head of the trail on doce and both they and our dogs were positively civil. Nice to see. Lots of water in the monte, everyone had a good time.

morning run:
Gracie
Bette
Eve
Osita
Rufus
Reggie
(6)

Blue went and hid or something, she was supposed to come. First time out since I hurt my ankle. We didn't go terribly far, and we avoided the beach because there are so many people around right now. Reggie managed to gash himself in the monte, and I don't know how. I noticed it right after the turn from the Au Soleil Couchant road onto the access road in the monte on the way home. It's a fairly bad flesh wound, but not very deep. We've got it bandaged right now, but still, he's a spazz and I have to watch him more closely. Otherwise it was all good.

22.07.10

mid-day swim:
Greta
Zasu
Molly
(3)

I'm still hurt (ankle, neck) and there are a lot of people around, so we just took the fatties and the baby. Molly, it turns out, was the swimming.champion of the day, hardly leaving the water at all and coming WAY out to get us both several times. Greta did 7 laps. Zasu swam a bunch, although she wasn't terribly into it. Lots of seaweed and no sun. Still, fun watching Molly get better if nothing else (her technique improves every time).

Oscar
Otto

Rufus

Lily
Jack
(7)

Longish, up the beach, into the monte at the tortuga sign, out to no-man's land and back down to the beach at Au Soleil Couchant. I tried Lily on the leash for a bit in no-man's land; she's pretty awful, but she got better in a few meters. She'll figure it out. Flamingos close again, and lots of little crabs.

mid-morning swim:
Greta
Zasu
Gowron
Molly
(4)

There is a lot of seaweed on the beach, which means the chaquistes are totally out of control: clouds of them descended on us as we got to the water. Still, somehow it was fun. Molly is figuring out what to do with those paddles at the end of her silly legs. Zasu wasn't extremely interested in swimming today, but everyone did plenty. Greta did 7 laps.

mid-day run:
Alice
Lucy
Ginger
Henry
George
Ernie
Chester
(7)

Left late, took the short route to Au Soleil Couchant through the monte and back down the beach. Ginger is still a step slow towards the end, but seemed like she was fine for most of the way... need to watch that. Otherwise it was perfect. Good distance for this crew (except Chester, of course, but he loves the sisters).

morning swim:
Greta
Zasu
Maggie
Ziggy
Molly
(5)

Molly's first, and she swam well; she also whines a bit on the shore, but she'll get over it. Greta did 7 laps again, and everyone else did what they usually do.

afternoon jaunt:
April
Monkey
Alice
(3)

There were people around, but April hasn't gone in a while, so we just went up the beach to the bend and back via the maginot line; April was on the leash the whole time. We ran into that herd of cows loose on doce at the end of the maginot line, and Alice FREAKED OUT, turned tail and ran back to the beach. I had to drive the cows down doce a bit before she'd run back. Those were the biggest dogs Alice ever saw. Pretty funny. Everyone else was good.

Elewah

One more than normal. Elewah went the whole way from start to finish. Tuesday was off the leash for most of it but really misbehaved right as we got home: ran away from me, went up to Gary's, etc. She spent an hour in the box. Everyone else was good.

16.07.10

mid-day swim:
Greta
Zasu
Maggie
Ziggy
Bosha*
(5)

Greta did 7 laps in moderate seas, and was tired at the end. Zasu is now so routinely a super-aquatic dog that it almost goes without saying. Mags and Zig did their usual little deal. Bosha is having some intestinal issues, and is taking pills now; she sort of pooped herself down the beach to Kikis'... she'll be back for dinner.

evening s/k duty:
Zasu
Miles
Tito
(3)

Roni took these three down to the shrimpery to see if she could meet the pathetic little stray that's been hanging out there, which she did. The bugs are a force to be reck'ed with, but Roni in a babushka and a hoodie triumphs over all.

15.07.10

morning run:
Oscar
Otto
Archie
Chester
Rufus
Reggie
Jack
(7)

Rufus was a little crazy/willful at the beginning and the end, but otherwise everyone was good. The bugs are out of the box, especially in no-man's land. Also: there were flamingos in a close-by charco and out in no-man's land, where they normally don't appear until November. Interesting. We saw sea-turtle tracks on the beach as well. Jack swam out to get me all on his own today for the first time.

14.07.10

mid-day swim:
Greta
Zasu
Maggie
Ziggy
Miles
Bosha*
(6)

Greta did 7 laps, and was a bit stronger today than yesterday. Mags and Zig did their usual, and Zasu once again went above and beyond the call of duty several times. I believe Zasu now holds the record for farthest distance from the shore by any of our dogs (she looks so serious when she's out there). Miles read his pee-mail, and Bosha mrfl'ed her way down to Kikis', but we expect her back before dinner.

Monkey was kind of a jerk, and we had to catch her and put her back in the yard; needs more work, and does not like to swim. Greta did 6 laps and seemed tired; Zasu and PupG swam an incredible amount.

12.07.10

afternoon swim:
Greta
Zasu
Maggie
Ziggy
(4)

Greta did 6 laps in moderate seas. She still can barely use her right rear leg, but it doesn't affect her swimming, so we're trying to get her out for exercise regardless; we need to get her to the vet. Zasu swam a lot, and surprised us by coming out very far to get us at the end, after everyone else had come in; what a trooper. Mags and Zig did their usual routine.

Went early and long, and did it quickly as well; between the mosquitoes and the general pace of this group we fairly flew the full 10k, stopping less than a handful of times (Bette does like a drink of water now and then). Bugs are officially terrible now, and no-man's land is seriously flooded.

Cut short because Archie started not feeling well about half way into the monte, past weathertop hill; we changed our course and came back the most direct way. He seems okay now, but his front left paw appears to be bothering him. Everyone else was good.

Just up to the palm tree and back, since we left late; at this time of year that's a pretty decent distance for the fatties, and they don't get tired out because they can always jump in the water. Everyone swam a lot.

Greta did 7 laps in calm-ish seas; her leg has really been bothering her lately, but today it seems better. Zasu swam a ton, as did Mags and Zig. Miles read his pee-mail, and Bosha larked around like an idiot and ran off to Kikis' to check it out. I'm sure she'll be back by dinner.

Rufus was too excited at first, so he stayed behind while the others swam for a while, and then we let him out later. Greta did 7 laps in calm-ish seas. Miles, of course, did not swim, but he did catch up on a lot of beach-side pee-mail.
