Roni and I live in Yucatán, Mexico with a rather large pack of dogs; effectively, we run an ad-hoc dog shelter but sometimes it's hard to think of it that way. The larger life of our pack is chronicled in Roni's blog, where you will find pictures and prose about what goes on here.
As this whole deal started to develop it became obvious to us that exercise is a big part of maintaining discipline among a pack of dogs. Roni and I both like taking walks but it's not such a good idea that Roni runs too much (injuries) and we have more dogs than can comfortably be walked at once. I therefore naturally slid into taking some of them on runs both because it tires them out and I need the exercise. I was diabetic a few years ago after fending off cancer; some of the chemo messed with my joints and as I got heavier my blood sugar edged closer and closer to diabetic. In the intervening several years Roni and I have both adopted a vegan diet which helped us both generally and which also has increased my ability to exercise; this is a key factor in effectively managing my diabetic tendencies. Last I checked my blood sugar was 85, well below the diabetic threshold. When I first started running I could barely do 2k. Now I can run 10k a day if I don't have much else to do and I frequently go farther.
We decided to start keeping a blog of daily doggie activity, just for ourselves. As we continued with it we found it useful to note things in time, so that we could go back later and see in what month some incident occurred, or whatever. The format of entries standardized over time. In the last few months this blog has sort of turned into my blog, whereas Dogs of Celestún has always been Roni's blog.
