M&Z took these out. Everyone was good.

morning walk #2:

M&Z then took these out. Twiggy insisted on bolting over towards Gary's to see something - probably a stray or something left by one, there are many skittish strays around at the moment. They went and got her and made her come in since she was misbehaving, so she didn't go along on the rest of the walk. Otherwise all good.

27.02.13

morning run:
Otto
Frijolita
Mega
Lex
Zoot
Petey
Amber
Steve McQueen
(8)

Hidden trail: ~8k. Amber left on the leash. I let her off at the turn west to the beach and put her back on as we came off of the beach at Au Soleil Couchant; she was a good girl throughout, listened when she was off the leash and had a good time. Otto did well; I saw no traces of a limp and he felt good enough to ran off and screw around at various points.

M&Z took these out on the beach. When they got back Frankie and Twiggy bolted north to check out the garbage pile behind the construction site so they did a little time in the box afterwards but no harm done.

morning walk #1:
Stella
Molly
Monkey
Ziggy
Luna

M&Z took these out first with Stella and Luna on leashes. Molly bolted to the beach when they came home because it's stormy and she wanted to play in the surf. I went down and got her... no harm done.

morning walk #2:
April
Frankie
Twiggy
MoMo
Linda

M&Z took these out second, with April on the leash. Cute group.

morning walk #3:

M&Z took these out last with Shirley and Daisy on leashes; they went on the beach this time. Everyone had fun.

evening walk:
Zasu

Northern charcos: ~9k (not sure exactly but more than the hidden trail and less than the long and winding road). Mo managed to sneak onto this run; there was some chaos as I was getting the first eight into the launch-pad and Mo ducked into the Bodega (where she's been hanging with M&Z) and then snuck out while Roni and I were wrangling everyone else. I didn't realize she had gotten into the mix until I opened the gate and saw her bolt out; it wasn't worth bringing everyone back just to return her and she does listen well so what the hell... it was strange taking nine. I took us out like we were going to the hidden trail or the long and winding road. When we got to the turn to the beach I decided I didn't want to do that but I also didn't want to be gone quite as long as a 10k so instead I took us north to where the closest northern charcos end and then curved around to the east and south; we did a bit of off-roading around those charcos because I couldn't quite remember how to pick up the trail to get back to the road but we managed. PupG was up to her eyeballs in salt-pond and had to be washed off when we got home - she was happy as a clam out there. I had Tuesday on the leash the whole way. Everyone was really good despite the strange route.

mid-day swim:

(1)

She really didn't want to do it. Roni had to work hard to coax her out into the front yard and I had to carry her from the gate to the water, no easy task in the noon sun. Still, once we were in the water she swam well. It was a little choppy but not as cold or stinky and deep enough that it wasn't irritating. I made her swim into my hand a lot on each "lap" so that they took longer and I didn't have to drag her out into deeper water as much. She suffered through it like a trooper until she was breathing heavily.

morning run:
Alice
Rita
Eve
Godzilla
George
Maggie
Lily
Molly
(8)

To the swimming hole: ~7k. Maggie really lagged a lot, especially towards the end. The pace was probably a little high because of Lily and Eve. I took Lily because she kind of got skipped over; she usually goes with the Good Boys Club. I had to put her on the leash towards the end because she was too interested in a pile of garbage on the road to the tortuga crossroads; she would've been more tired out if she had gone with a faster group. Maggie, on the other hand, will sleep all day for sure. Everyone else was good. We ran into people on motos who behaved strangely (creeping along behind us despite our best efforts) and everyone was good about it.

Roni took this group out for a walk around the cow pasture and environs. Miles defiantly dawdled as usual but he shaped up and they had a nice walk. Zasu appeared to come up lame at the farthest intersection but wouldn't get Roni get a hold of her and skittered off back towards home on three legs; Roni convinced her to slow down and carried her for a spell and now she seems fine... pretty good that she can give Roni a run for her money on three legs. Frijolita and Frankie mixed it up a little bit on the trail home as M&Z were heading out - not a big deal but something to be aware of. Monkey had a blast.

22.02.13

morning run:
Truman
Blue
Reggie
Archie
Rufus
Jack
Lex
Steve McQueen
(8)

Hidden trail: ~8k. I screwed up getting out of the gate; Roni said "DON'T open that gate" to me because she saw Reggie was in an awkward place but all I heard over the din was "OPEN THAT GATE" which is what I did - classic. She was right but it so happens it worked out okay; I really need to make sure my charges shut up for at least a couple seconds before we bolt. Truman was especially loud in the launch-pad and he needs to cut that out. The good news is that once we were on our way this group was absolutely stellar. I took a route designed to avoid people but it was to no avail - they are working all of the southern charcos near to us right now. As we came up to the main intersection a truck with perhaps 20 salt workers was just reaching it from the south. I still had Rufus on the hook and had everyone else stop and sit next to me, which they did perfectly; the truck rolled by us slowly, several of the workers hooting and whistling while they all stared in disbelief at the strange, bearded gringo with eight dogs. There was not a peep from my charges and they didn't so much as budge, despite the provocation. I was so proud I didn't know what to do with myself. I waited to see which way they went (east as it turned out) and took the other exit (north). We also ran into fishermen on the beach and again they were perfect. At three points during the run Steve McQueen had a little tribe.freak-out and started to bolt ahead of us. Each time Rufus, Jack and Reggie charged ahead, caught him, made him stop and waited for me to catch up. The first time I thought it was coincidence but then they did it two more times and it was clear they did it on purpose. Incredible. Apparently I now have assistants. Everyone came home off of the leash. Good job.

Hidden trail: ~8k. Osita bailed on me right as we turned off of the coco trail on the way out. She was already starting to act like she didn't want to go at the shrimpery but I put her on the leash and tried to coax her a little way - no doing, she just doesn't want to run with me. I don't understand why. She was up for going when we left. Something must've happened on a run recently that made her skittish about going and I didn't notice. This is upsetting but I don't know what to do about it; she'll just have to go on walks for a while instead. I saw her turn to head back and knew she would just go home so I carried on with the other seven, all of whom were good. I had Hazel and Amber on the leash on the beach because there was a jogger coming towards us from the south; Mega barked a little at him as we passed but everyone else was good. I left those two that way for the rest of the run and there were no problems... EXCEPT: someone stole seven of our concrete beams from the shrimpery that were still waiting to be planted for fence-posts. It happened while I was on the run. Roni heard some shenanigans and loud noises then all the way up here. Very upsetting.

M&Z took these out for a walk in the monte. I was out on my bike looking for our vigas in case someone had just carried them off. I ran across M&Z and the dogs as they were coming home. Otherwise everyone seemed okay.

M&Z took these out for a second walk with April and Stella on the leash. On the way home the leashes got tangled up and Stella slipped hers somehow; she ran up to the road near the soldiers where I just happened to be, talking to same about the stolen vigas. Zoe appeared in a few seconds looking for Stella and got her hooked back up while I was still there. No harm no foul but yet another reminder that Stella really needs to be on the leash, especially close to home.

Roni took this group out for a walk around the cow pasture. She had to carry Henry, Tito and Miles across the road on the way out to deal with traffic and some dumb behavior from her crew but after that everyone straightened up and had a fine walk. Lucy bailed at the gate; we knew someone had bloody diarrhea last night and after we saw that I investigated and know it was her so she's on meds. Godzilla gets special mention as a good girl and Miles also deserves a gold star for not screwing around on the way home at the road.

Hidden trail: ~8k. Roni said we were gone 40min and I believe it - we ran well more than 8k like we had been set on fire thanks to Tuesday and her incredible intensity. I didn't take her off the leash but she didn't care and she didn't get paranoid. I took us north because there are so many people working in the southern charcos right now; it was early and actually cold out so I didn't think Xmul and her humans would've ventured out yet. We went back into the monte at Au Soleil Couchant instead of the tortuga sign because I saw some bundled-up person walking north far to the south and I didn't want to deal with Elewah, who was fired up to put it mildly. Probably one of the fastest ~8k runs ever for us.

Terreno federal loop: ~7k. We went out south via the land bridge, cut east at the tar paper shack and took the terreno federal trail north, hit the swimming hole and looped around to the parallel road home. Zoot really wanted to go on the last two runs and put himself out there again today; this is a perfect run for Petey and they were happy together and paling around with Twigs and Hazel. I put Hazel on the hook just east of the land bridge because she wasn't listening very well; I let her off ~100m south of the swimming hole and left her like that until we were on the Au Soleil Couchant road. She needs a lot of work on discipline but at least she's good on the leash and runs with enthusiasm. Maggie went to roll in that filth on the Au Soleil Couchant road after I explicitly forbid her and all of her running-mates were past it; I was not happy with her but she was due for a bath anyway, which she got when we arrived home. It was a bit chilly out; we left early and George was especially up for it - nice to see. Everyone really did well and had a good time.

Southern charcos: ~8k. We left with nobody on the leash and it worked out well; PupG loves to harass me the first 50m out of excitement and sheer god-damndedness. I managed to keep them out of the filth on the Au Soleil Couchant road - a personal victory. Otto looked good the whole way; after the run he seems a bit stiff when he gets up, so we'll see how he's doing tomorrow. There were a ton of salt workers in all the charcos south of the Au Soleil Couchant road so we got to see plenty of them on the palapa road and everyone was perfect. I put Molly on the leash as we were nearing the southernmost point because of all the motos we saw; she didn't give any sign like she wanted to chase the couple that came in range. I had her on one end and Lex at the other by the shrimpery to keep everyone together. Good group.

Roni took this crew out for a walk around the cow pasture. Linda appears to be having some poo-poo trouble, which may or may not be related to her behavior; she ducked off and bolted for home about halfway through the walk. She arrived at the gate at least 15min before everyone else; I figured she must be in trouble so I put her in the box. Roni said that Miles was an ass about the traffic-laden road on the way home AGAIN and must be carried over it in both directions henceforth; he really is a dick about it and spent some time in the box after the walk. Most of them were good but the couple that misbehaved screwed everyone else over.

15.02.13

morning run:
Truman
Rita
Eve
Rufus
Lily
Jack
Daisy
Steve McQueen
(8)

Northern loop: ~7k. We ended up doing the loop around the swimming hole but that was not my plan; I cut the run short at the turn onto the bag end land bridge because Steve McQueen was freaked out and decided to bolt for home. This happened because Rufus scared the crap out of him ~100m earlier at the intersection of the palapa road and the Au Soleil Couchant road. We stopped there for water and to collect everyone. Back where the Au Soleil Couchant road splits we ran into someone on a moto and Lily and Steve both barked at him. This was the second time this had happened and I felt I should put Steve, at least, on the leash, both because he had been barking and because he needed a refresher. I had just let Rufus off the leash a while before; he was really fired up leaving this morning. When I went to put Steve on the hook he wigged out a little; Rufus reacted to this by harassing him and this let to Steve freaking out even more and getting his paw stuck in a loop in the leash by accident, causing an even more violent reaction from Steve. I finally calmed him down and took the hook off since it was doing absolutely no good but by then he was really unhappy. I put Rufus back on the leash immediately and he stayed on for the rest of the way home. Steve sort of stayed with us for a bit but then obviously wanted to go home and took off ahead of us. At this point I was sick of this nonsense and wanted to go home as well, so from that point on we were chasing Steve home. I put Lily on the other end of the leash with Rufus as we got near the jeep berm because she had barked at every single person we had seen and also needed some discipline. Steve ended up getting home a full minute before us and we hauled ass. Eve also misbehaved by rolling in that filth on the Au Soleil Couchant road; I told her not to, she ignored me and I had to go over and physically push her off of it and yell at her to get her to stop. All in all not a great run, although everyone else was pretty good. The older dogs need to be better, especially Rufus; it makes it hard to work with the younger dogs when the older ones cause problems.

Short southern loop: ~3k. This was half walk, half jog. Lucy is looking a lot better after months of eating in a crate and getting out on walks so I wasn't so trepidatious about letting her run for stretches - she certainly wanted to. We left with nobody on the leash and it stayed that way until the very end when I put Molly on at the shrimpery just to keep her honest. We went out across the land bridge. It was my intention to take the ridge or the road north and come back via the alt. land bridge but everyone was so up for it I decided to throw a little loop in. We went south to the tar-paper shack, crossed that charco to pick up the terreno federal road and headed north on it to the secret trail, continued north to the intersection and then cut back in and came home on the cut-over. Bosha ran with great enthusiasm if not aplomb; she seems to rediscover how to run on all fours every time she does it but what the hell, she had fun. Everyone was really good.

Southern charcos: ~8k. This was the first time I didn't leave with someone on the leash in forever; I didn't use the leash once the whole run. We went out south this time across the land bridge and into the monte the usual way, took the palapa road all the way north and cut in towards the swimming hole from the Au Soleil Couchant road and came home via the cut-over and the dirty road. We took the southern turn towards the swimming hole because I saw a moto coming up behind us and I wanted to turn away from their most likely path. They saw me and even stopped and waited for me to wrangle the dogs; this was mainly Elewah, who still has a bit of mischief in her and likes chasing motos. She was thinking about it but because the driver worked with me and waited, I got her moving in the right direction and kept her from chasing him verbally as he pulled away; this was her first run since surgery and she was really fired up so I was especially glad that she listened that well. We also ran into Mudo in his truck with a couple of his dogs right at the intersection on the way home; there was some friendly barking but he kept heading south and I kept moving west and everyone sorted themselves out quickly. Very nice run.

Northern loop: ~7k (might be 8k, not sure). We left late but it's the tribe so I don't mind tiring them out in the heat; Otto's cardio isn't exactly back yet but he's game and his leg seems good. This was also Hazel's first run post-surgery but she's obviously feeling just fine. I took us to the swimming hole but then cut south, crossed the bag end land bridge and took the northern tip of the palapa road to the Au Soleil Couchant road, then looped back to the parallel road and home via the cut-over. The swimming hole only has a little bit of water left in it but they didn't care. I had Amber on the hook out of the gate but I let her off east of the intersection and she was fine; she and Hazel were both on the leash by the time we got to the cut-over and I left them that way until we got home. Mega and Hazel both like to bark at people a little too much; nothing major but something to be aware of. It only happened once for a couple of seconds. Otherwise a nice run.

Tuesday was on the whole way and was a good girl - I don't think she got paranoid at all. Alice kept up for the most part, although she and Reggie obviously took off to go jump in a charco together; they were cute running for all they were worth to catch up.

Southern charcos: ~8k. Slightly different route today to avoid that lingering, stinking pile of offal on the Au Soleil Couchant road: we went out the normal way but doubled back to the intersection, hit the swimming hole and ducked around north to catch the Au Soleil Couchant road just west of where it forks to join the palapa road. The swimming hole is nearly dry now but there was a little bit of water in the bottom of it and that was enough for Monkey, Twiggy and Rufus to have fun. Rufus was really fired up today, although he was relatively easy to get on the hook. I stoved a toe on the gate getting out so that hurt for a couple of kilometers but the pace and general mood of the dogs sustained me. Everyone was really stellar today. We saw several salt workers and nobody even flinched. Rita was really up for it and had a great time the whole way; I think maybe it sometimes helps her to ignore her horrible skin/ear problems for a while and she really does enjoy running with her sisters.

She was enthusiastic before we left and running with us all the way north. I left her on the leash until we got home - it seemed to reassure her and she didn't dig her heels in or misbehave. What a good girl. It was chilly and deep but she swam like a mermaid.

Southern charcos: ~8k. We left the southern way over the land bridge and came back via the parallel access road. I should've taken us to the beach instead and am still regretting it: some asshole dumped what I can only guess must've been a huge bag of rendered animal fat or something at least as disgusting on the Au Soileil Couchant road right where it bends. It was one of the worst smells I've ever encountered and almost made me throw up right there in the road. I didn't realize what it was before I was on top of it and by then Mega had already rolled in it to the point where he looked like he'd been swimming. The vertiginous retching horror that enveloped me as I realized what was going on caused involuntary gagging on my part. Mega and Steve got into it the most before I found my wind again and yelled at them to get away from it. At that point I should've taken us to the beach but I stupidly forgot that the tribe are idiots about things like baths and instead came home in the monte. Never again. The smell for the last ~2.5km was incredible and the idiotic display of bad behavior on Mega's part when I bathed him upon arrival was also a treat for everyone; you'd think I was skinning him alive. Other than that it was a great run but it's hard to remember through the smell... Amber was a good girl again. We left with her on the leash but I let her off and put her back on a few times to work with her and she seems to have lost at least some of her skittishness. I had Amber on the hook and Mega on the other end of the leash on the coco trail - a real treat for the senses. Still, I must ultimately blame the flaming jack-ass who threw a huge bag of offal out in the wilderness for fun. If only I could return the favor some day.

I took this crew for a walk around the nearest charcos. We out down the dirty road to the alt. land bridge, crossed over and caught the road for a spell then came back via the main land bridge. Shirley was on the leash the whole time to keep her from running like a maniac but everyone else was off and behaved themselves. Ernie held up and waited for me with everyone else on the trail leaving and was a good boy the whole way. A very cute group on a cloudy morning.
