Southern charcos: ~7k. We left a little late and I didn't want to be gone too long so we skipped the road to no-man's land and went directly to the palapa road, crossed at the berm to get to the swimming hole and came home via the cut-over and dirty road as normal. Rufus was really excited getting out of the gate but it went relatively smoothly and everyone calmed down quickly. I let him off the hook after we turned east into the monte and he stayed off until the trail home. Lex listened well and had a blast running with the big dogs; he was generally glued to Archie who set a good example for him. Cute.

Roni took this group out around the cow pasture and to the alternate land bridge. Monkey and Lily paled around a lot together on little adventures; Lily is so fast it's like she has super-powers. Miles dawdled as usual but Roni just let everyone run around and swim in the charcos a bit since they're deep and not horribly disgusting at the moment. It was extremely hot when they left and everyone was glad to get back but they obviously had a good time.

Hidden trail: ~8k. Another "crazy dog" run: Ernie, Ziggy, Xmul and Daisy were all nuts to get going. Once on the road everyone settled down. We went across the not-so-land-bridge and ran along the ridge going north instead of on the dirty road for a change; there were flamingoes in that charco, which is quite deep at the moment. I let Xmul off when we got to the intersection and she stayed off until we got to the tortuga sign, where we encountered two bird trappers. Xmul barked at them and shied away from me when I went to put her on the hook; she's still quite skittish around unfamiliar people and needs work. Once on the leash she was good again and didn't utter a peep until we got home. Everyone else was great and had a good time.

Roni took this crew out down the dirty road and back. It was really hot when she left but everyone wanted to go so badly she did it anyway. Linda had a good time paling around with Lucy and Reggie; she ran down to the ocean at the end but it was too rough for her and I ran out and scooped her up. Everyone else was good, including Miles, albeit with a little assistance from Roni early on.

To the beach at Au Soleil Couchant: ~6k. I thought we might go the slightly longer way but we left too late and my stomach was bothering me the whole run so I took the normal way to the swimming hole. I let Tuesday off the leash for a bit but had her back on by the beach; in general she was good, ran really well and had a good time. I intended to put Mega on the leash somewhere near the coco trail on the way home but he either got the memo or was just too excited when he realized how close we were to home because he took off on said trail and got home a minute before the rest of us; he is incredibly fast but was a good listener all the way up to that point. I didn't get mad at him for it but he needs to be on the hook earlier next time - without his fellow tribelings he's a bit of a wildcard. In general a good, high-paced run.

Southern charcos: ~8k. Same route I took last time I went that way: road to no-man's land, palapa road, swimming hole, dirty road and home. The monte was flooded up to my knees for long stretches along the way; the bugs were bad in places but not quite as bad as I thought they'd be... perhaps I'm just getting too grizzled. On the dirty road Daisy led a raiding party down to the charco almost certainly because people had been there yesterday; she was very slow getting back and tried to avoid being put on the leash, slipped her collar and got home to the gate a few seconds before the rest of us. She spent some quality time in the box for that and is going to have to be watched - we can't have her starting to misbehave. I let Xmul off the hook to jump in the swimming hole and she ran off the leash until we crossed the alt. land bridge; she was good but didn't have much opportunity to be bad. Everyone else was generally good.

I took this group out for a walk around the cow pasture the long way, leaving via the dirty road and coming back on the coco trail. Everyone was enthusiastic and dealt well with a variety of strange occurrences on the way. As we were just leaving we encountered a fellow from town standing in the middle of the road at our intersection; he's perhaps not all there, a heavy drinker, and was far away from his normal haunts. He didn't respond to anything I said or to the dogs sniffing him which is probably why everyone was so good about it; I had to intervene with Buddy and pick him up but otherwise all of the dogs just kept moving down the trail. We ran into some workers loading a mountain of salt into bags on the dirty road and again everyone was good. Buddy got turned around a little bit once or twice but it was easily corrected. Bosha was off the leash for a good bit of it. Everyone had fun swimming in the charcos. At the very end we saw that same strange dude up our road to the north towards the soldiers but nobody barked or chased him. PupG and Frankie snuck down to the beach on the north road when we came back but they were good about coming in with me when I came to get them.

Hidden trail: ~8k. They were as good on the rest of the run as they were noisy getting out of the gate. I let Rufus off the hook at the torguta crossroads on the way out (we took the long way); he has to leave on the leash just to make him focus on running but once he's over his initial excitement he's an angel. This is the second recent run that Chester and Ziggy have attended together and they were good. Chester doesn't like to run too close to Ziggy but he's also a thousand times faster than Ziggy so it isn't much of an issue. Everyone swam a lot at the swimming hole and in the ocean. I put Rufus and Ernie on either end of the leash for the trail home and it worked out well.

Roni took this crew out for a jaunt to the land bridge and environs. Lily left on the leash to keep her from running off too fast; she managed to slip her collar and ran down to the shrimpery and back with Eve and Blue but they were all back to Roni on the trail before she had gone very far. Miles did his usual screwing around early on but cleaned his act up with some encouragement from Roni. Everyone but Zasu, Tito and Henry rolled in some awful poo and had to be hosed off on arrival; they all looked pleased and proud of themselves.

Hidden trail: ~8k. The saga with Zoot continues - he is really skittish about putting himself out there and coming along so he got left again. He's going to have to go on a few walks with Petey or something to get over this. Also, Zoot was acting like maybe he wasn't feeling well earlier in the morning and Roni thought his back legs were a little stiff like Peteys - he might have the same condition, so we'll have to get him checked out. Power and Chaos notwithstanding this was a really good group. I stuck them all in the launchpad before we left and there was no barking (from the ones in the launchpad). Molly left on the hook and once again I let her off as much as I thought prudent. We ran into a pair of firewood gatherers who took the unusual approach of using a small boat to go around the charco next to the alt. land bridge and grab all the loose firewood on the shore. They had a little (tribe-sized) dog with them on the shore who obviously wasn't fond of the water; my charges were all really good about running into them - they just said "hi" (bark bark) and kept moving along with me. I had Molly and Mega on the leash at the very end to keep the pace down. Everyone was good.

The land bridge is partly submerged now as is most of the monte to the south after yesterday's rain. The whole way to the road to no-man's land was under water but the actual road itself was high and dry. We came back via the swimming hole and the dirty road. Xmul was off the leash around from before the swimming hole to just before the intersection and was a good girl. We were noisy getting out of the gate but everyone was good by the time we got home.

To the beach at Au Soleil Couchant: ~6k. We took the slightly shorter route but nobody seemed to mind. Maggie, Alice and George kept up well, especially considering that everyone else on this run is fast; the faster dogs just ran around and played more as there were plenty of large puddles and ponds to jump in. Everyone enjoyed the swimming hole. We left with everyone off the leash and stayed that way until the turn onto the coco trail on the way home, when I put Frankie on just to make sure she didn't run ahead in the final stretch. I forgot that Twigs is the one who needs the leash near the end and had to go get her on the beach after she finished checking out the construction site to the north; still, no harm, no foul and she was an angel on the run.

Roni took this crew around the cow pasture the long way, effectively; down the coco trail, straight down to the charcos and around to the alt. land bridge, then back the way she came (same distance either way at that point). The bugs were bad when the breeze stopped and it was strangely hot and hazy at the same time. Lucy obviously had a blast jumping in the ponds, as did Monkey. Blue is an angel and Roni only had to threaten Miles with being picked up a couple times to get him to move a little quicker. She put Monkey on the leash near the end - an outrage according to Monkey, but she forgot all about it by the time they got to the gate. Everyone looked happy.

The first three I took out as I normally do and they all did well. Bette and Lucy both chased me around in the water a lot and had a good time. I took Petey out at the end just to do something with him but he has the same habit as his sister Amber: they are fixated on chasing butterflies. When he's with a couple of his siblings he's easily influenced and plays in the water more but by himself he went nuts for the butterflies all over the beach. It was cute, and I got him into the water many times but he was not very focused. Need to work with him more. He did listen well about coming off the beach and didn't wander off, at least.

Hidden trail: ~8k. Molly was off the hook more than she has been, largely due to the paucity of people in the monte. It was overcast and not crushingly hot so I don't understand why the monte wasn't full of salt workers but it wasn't. We went via the swimming hole which was overflowing again after yesterday's rain... most of the swampy bits are swampy once again. Daisy was the loser back after some kind of expedition on the road home so she was on the other end of the leash with Molly until we got home. Everyone was really pretty good and had a good time.

To the beach at Au Soleil Couchant via the swimming hole: ~6k. I took a slightly shorter route than I have been because we left so late. I tried to get Zoot out to go but he's a real pain in the ass; it's not that he doesn't like going, he just doesn't like the pressure of getting ready to go. I'll have to figure out how to work him into the next run and do something with Petey as well, who is a similar pain in the ass. Mega continued his streak of listening well although he still likes to be too far ahead. Xmul was off the hook near the swimming hole and on the beach and was good in general. I scooped Monkey up at the very end as we were crossing doce; the tribe ran ahead on the trail, which irritated me, but it seems they always just run to the gate. Can it be irritating and sweet at the same time?

To the beach at Au Soleil Couchant via the swimming hole: ~7k. More or less the same route as last time. We left a little bit earlier than we have been so it wasn't quite as hideously hot. The monte is drying out a tiny bit in the absence of rain but it's still plenty flooded and buggy. I had Ernie on the hook just across the alternate land bridge on the way out because he was way too far ahead; he was really worked up and crazed to go when we left and it took him a couple kilometers to get it out of his system. Other than that everyone was perfect. We passed salt workers eating their breakfasts, trucks, people pushing bikes, and nobody so much as sniffed at them. To the beach at Au Soleil Couchant via the swimming hole: ~7k. We left late. It's been a while since April has gone on a regular run, largely because she couldn't be trusted not to bolt north on the beach. Every now and then you have to try again, though, and Roni suggested I take April and just be careful with her on or near the beach. I left with her on the hook but let her off on the way to the swimming hole; I had to put her on briefly before we got there because she was already showing signs of not listening, but that seemed to reign her in a bit. I put her back on after we passed the three-way junction of the Au Soliel Couchant road and the parallel access road and left her on the hook from there home. The tribe were all very good. Mega is listening much better, and always stops and looks back at me when I call his name; he didn't set quite such a crazy pace, either, so maybe he's just calming down a bit. We ran into Mudo and his son in law in their truck with Lucas, Mudo's dog; they were getting some sand out on the tortuga road and we ran right into them. Steve barked a tiny bit but everyone was good in general. Linda was spooked by the truck so we all had to back-track a bit to pick her up and I carried her around the truck; everyone else was really good about this and stuck together the whole time. I put Monkey on the other end of the leash with April when we got to the shrimpery to keep her from her usual miscreant behavior near the house. The tribe ran ahead a bit on the trail home but they all ended up waiting at the gate.

Confusing and complicated swimming morning. Greta went out by herself and did very well. Next I took Linda, Amber and Lex out to horse around a bit, which they did with great abandon. Unfortunately Amber has developed a bit of an obsession with butterflies - she doesn't listen nearly as well and insists on chasing them constantly. This makes it difficult to keep her sibs under control with her out there. When I brought those three back in I went back out with Amber, Lex and Petey and they had fun but Amber kept getting distracted by the butterflies and pulled them towards the south with her shenanigans. We jumped into the water many times and they all swam a lot but I really had to work to round them back up. I went out with just Mega and Lex and they both had a good time swimming and were a bit more focussed; Lex is really competitive with his brothers (but not Amber), but they still swam a lot. Finally I put the tribe back in and took first Shirley and then Bette out for plain old swims and they both did well.

I put Ernie on the hook for ~200m on the beach because he led a raiding party to go roll in the disgusting sheet of sea cucumber slime that has been rotting at Au Soleil Couchant for the last couple of weeks. As we were nearing home on the dead goat trail Rufus, Lily and Jack bolted to the north to check something out near that strange charco; they ran all the way around to the west and caught up with us almost at the intersection, but I didn't know that at the time and spent a couple solid minutes yelling for them and getting the living crap bitten out of me. I was not happy and put Rufus on the leash there; I put Ernie on the other end of it when we got to our trail and made sure everyone behaved themselves when we crossed the road. The bugs are simply awful.
